Convocation 2018

Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon held its 7th Annual Convocation for the Class of PGPM 2017-18 & PGDM 2016-18 on 16th July 2018 at Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, LODHI Road, New Delhi. The event also witnessed the commencement ceremony of the new batch of PGDM (2018-20) in the presence of Chief Guest, Capt. Abhimanyu Singh, Cabinet Minister, Govt. of Haryana, Guest of Honor, Mr Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman & CEO, ReNew Power, Dr Bala V. Balachandran, Founder, Dean and Chairman of the Board, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Mr Mohan Lakhamraju, Vice-Chairman of the Board, Great Lakes Institute of Management.

The ceremony began on a devotional note by reciting the Saraswati Vandana, followed by the opening speech by Mr Mohan Lakhamraju. Mr Lakhamraju took everyone through the journey the institute has covered so far in becoming one of the best business schools in the country. During his speech, he mentioned key highlights such as being the first B-School to introduce Analytics, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning as a specialization, having an alumni network of 8000 graduates spread across 30 countries around the world, hosting the world-renowned TEDx sessions among various other events, and the welcoming of prominent educator, Dr Debashis Sanyal, as the director of GLIM Gurgaon. Quoting the line "We were an overnight success, 30 years in the making" from the movie "The Founder", based on the history of McDonald’s fast food chain, Mr Lakhamraju set the tone for the relentless journey that lies ahead for the young and dynamic graduates of the prestigious institute.

The lectern was then taken over by Dr Bala V Balachandran, who is the visionary behind the inception of the institute. Uncle Bala began his speech by delivering the most important, and often most overlooked, message in modern times – to be grateful to one’s parents, grandparents, spouses, loved ones and teachers, who have sacrificed beyond measure to be instrumental in this glorious occasion of a graduate’s life. In fact, he made the graduates stand up and take a pledge to be ever grateful to their parents, all their loved ones and all those who have been with them through their toughest times, making them who they are today – a truly awe-inspiring gesture. Words wouldn’t suffice to list out the valuable life-lessons that Uncle Bala delivered to the graduates. "To achieve with humility, to succeed with integrity, to have passion with compassion, and to learn a lot in order to earn a lot in order to return a lot," were some of his choicest advice to them. But the crux of it all was to never stop learning. In this age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Artificial Intelligence, Block-Chain, Machine Learning and various emerging disruptive technologies, the learning process should always be an ongoing one. For those who thought otherwise, Uncle Bala stated how he, even at the age of 81, keeps himself abreast with these emerging technologies.

Following Uncle Bala’s ever-inspiring speech, was Chief Guest, Captain Abhimanyu Singh’s address which reinforced some of the teachings that Uncle Bala presented. He addressed the graduates stating that they are now going to lead a very responsible life ahead, often being looked upon by various people, and no other institution could have prepared them better for such a life. He concluded his address stating that the degree that the graduates now possess, is not a degree of how well they’ve learn the concepts, but a degree of how capable they are of learning on their own.

Mr Sumant Sinha, the Guest of Honor at the event, is the Chairman and CEO of ReNew Power. His address focused on the fact that the graduates have now transitioned from being someone who could understand concepts and write papers to someone who could understand a real-life business. He mentioned that the graduates will now be involved in nothing short of a long and arduous race with stiff competition and a number of hurdles. Having said that, he cited numerous instances of his own struggles, and inspired the graduates to not be disheartened in the face of challenges, but to pick themselves up, muster the courage and keep moving on. He also stressed on the role of integrity as a critical way of life and the value that it manifests over time. Quoting the verse "Do not worry about the fruits of your labor, just do your job in the best possible manner" from the Bhagwat Gita, Mr Sinha conveyed the message that making money is a rather shallow reason for conducting business if one does not have the intention of creating something worthwhile and contributing to humanity.

After these noteworthy speeches was the moment everyone was waiting for – the distribution of certificates and trophies. The PGDM graduates were first awarded the certificates, followed by the PGPM graduates, by their respective program directors. A picture-perfect moment followed by a pledge of honesty, excellence, dignity, ethics, moral character and honour, led by the Vice-Chairman, Mr. Mohan Lakhamraju. After this, the convocation was finally declared closed by Uncle Bala.
