Dr. Philip Kotler started off by saying, “Marketing is done by everyone, everyday, every minute.” He explained by noting that we are all marketers, and whatever we do involves marketing – be it marriage marketing, house marketing, job marketing or image marketing. Broadening the use of marketing beyond the normal scope and including goods and services makes it marketing management.

Dr. Kotler spoke about the opportunity for marketing at the Bottom of the pyramid as according to him, marketing has paid attention to only about 2 Billion people of the world, while neglecting the remaining 5 Billion poor people.

He also spoke about the importance of the emerging multinationals in fulfilling the higher purpose of marketing  - creating jobs and building the middle class and about the current buzzwords and trends in marketing like Globalization, Glocalization, De- Globalization, Chindia (China & India) etc.

He ended his speech by talking about the end of traditional marketing and the journey towards marketing 3.0. “Blending the old and new marketing techniques synergistically is the way to go”, Kotler said, as the only thing in short-supply is the Customer, which the organizations have to win over!  Today, Marketing has ceased to be a department and has become a game-changer.

Dr. Kotler’s session was followed by a panel discussion on ‘Strategies to beat Emerging marketing challenges’. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Suj Chendrasekhar – Principal, Strategic Insights and had veteran speakers like Mr. K.S Ramesh, Mr. R. Sriram, Mr. Amit Chatterjee and Mr. Anotoine as the panel members. The session presided by Dr. Kotler himself, led to sharing of his invaluable comments and insights with the participants after each presentation by the panelists.
