Dr. Philip Kotler Guest Lecture @ Great Lakes Campus

What if Michelangelo came to teach painting, Pele giving lessons on football or Michael Jordan coaching for basketball? Great Lakers cherished this feeling of awesomeness when they came face to face with Dr. Philip Kotler in person during his master class @ Great Lakes, Chennai on 10th March, 2013. Listening to Dr. Philip Kotler, live, brought in the real meaning of being a marketing student or even an MBA student and obviously, the guest lecture hall was swarming with students and alumni who wished for a rendezvous with Dr. Kotler.

   Dr. Kotler began with the purpose of marketing, which traditionally is selling products and services and the mission of spreading the taste of civilization to more people in the world. But according to Dr. Philip Kotler, marketing also has a higher purpose of creating jobs and building the middle class – which constitutes the majority of any society.   

Then, he ran the participants through the various types of marketing viz. Commercial, Place, Person, Social, Political and Fundraising with examples and spoke about the evolution of marketing and the various books and authors who wrote about these various phases/stages of marketing. Dr. Kotler also mentioned his personal list of best marketers, which included the likes of Ingvar – Ikea, Richard Branson – Virgin, Walt Disney – Disney, Herb Kelleher – Southwest Airlines, Anita Roddick – Body shop, Bill Gates – Microsoft, Steve Jobs – Apple and Jeff Bezos – Amazon.com.

  Dr. Philip Kotler concluded his speech by talking about the end of old marketing and the emergence of Marketing 3.0, which includes giving back to the society and said that this is the way to go for organizations and they should capitalize on this opportunity of making an impression on their consumers while giving their best back to the society. Gajendra Sisodia and Kriti Dua. This was a national level case study competition (Samiksha 2013). Total of 127 teams participated in the event
