Training Program for Aspiring Women Directors
The Madras Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) joined hands with Great Lakes Institute of Management (GLIM) to provide a unique 2 day training program exclusively for qualified, competent women holding senior level positions aspiring to become members of Corporate Boards. The event was conducted on February 20 & 21, 2015.
In the last two decades, women have greatly increased their share of management jobs, and as entrepreneurs. However, all data sources and analysis report a continuing dearth of women in top decision making positions, as CEOs and board members.
The current Companies Act of India makes it mandatory to have women directors on the board of all listed companies and companies greater than a certain market cap. As a consequence of this law, there will be a requirement for women who are capable of taking on such responsibilities and executing them appropriately. Thus, the program MCCI created along with Great Lakes Institute of Management was targeted at women who are seen to be on the cusp of such a position so that they can acquire knowledge relevant to directorship of a board. The objective of this program, was to create a pool of competent, board-ready women directors, who would be equipped with necessary knowledge and skills to be inducted into corporate boards.
The program enabled the aspiring women directors to have a strategic perspective in a rapidly changing global scenario. Importance of board members- how they ultimately help steer a company and enable it to adapt and grow was focused upon. Corporate Finance was delved into so that the participants were able to have an understanding of interpreting financial statements which is crucial for decision making. Identification of conflict situations and approaches to handling them- especially from the point of view of a woman- was be explored as well.
