Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, held its 5th Annual Convocation for the class of PGPM (Energy) 2014-2016 and PGPM 2015-2016 on 18th May, 2016 at Epicentre Auditorium, Apparel House, Gurgaon. The event also witnessed the commencement ceremony of the new batch of PGPM (2016 - 2017) in the presence of Chief Guest, Mr. D Shivakumar, Chairman & CEO, PepsiCo, India and Guest of Honor, Dr. Sudhakar V. Balachandran, Professor at College of Business Administration, University of Illinois, Chicago.
The Chief Guest of the occasion, Mr. D Shivakumar delivered the convocation address and handed over the certificates to the graduating students in the presence of Dr. B.S.K. Naidu, Chairman Emeritus, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, Mr. Mohan Lakhamraju, CEO & Vice-Chairman, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Dr. Himadri Das, Director, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, faculty, students and parents.
Delivering the convocation address, Mr. D Shivakumar, Chairman & CEO, PepsiCo India, said, “on the basis of my personal experience and from the life around, I would like share with you all, the six mantras of life. Firstly, always have a positive mindset by believing in yourself. Follow your instincts and take calculated risks and success will follow. Secondly, value and manage your time by forgetting the past and always looking ahead. Thirdly, earn trust of each and every stake holder by fair practices. Fourthly, make wise choices in life aiming at higher learning quotient over money. Fifthly, learn new skills that would add value and help stretch your imagination and lastly, have your own incomparable definition of success. Success is what you have contributed to your field, do not stereotype success”. He also advised students to learn to embrace failures, as failures are nothing but lessons to learn.
Congratulating the Graduands, Dr. B. S. k. Naidu, Chairman Emeritus, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, said, “all the external management needs to be preceded by self-management. Self-management happens by controlling one’s thoughts and emotions”. He explained it further by quoting that “the wind may flow in any direction but the direction in which you go depends on how you set the sails and setting the sail is indeed self-management or more precisely thoughts management”.Dr. Naidu also advised students to listen to their inner voice while taking important decisions of life.
Wishing the students best through a video congratulatory message, Dr. Bala V Balachandran, Founder, Dean and Chairman, Great Lakes Institute of Management,shared, “the new job is just a beginning point, it is the time to buckle up and have a great attitude. It is the combination of attitude and aptitude that takes you to altitude. The secret of success is that you got to dream big, decide swift and deliver quickly.” He further expressedthat, “in the first 30 years one should learn and secure job, in next 30 years one should earn a lot and next 30 years we should aim at putting that money in to a good cause for society”.
Welcoming the new batch of PGPM (16-17), Dr. Himadri Das, Director, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon,said, “ Great Lakes has a tradition of giving a name to its every batch and these names have been inspired by the warrior clans” . The name of the current batch was announced as Knights. Dr. Das explained that “the reason behind taking inspiration from warrior clans is that these clans have shown attributes that are important for management graduates to be successful in their career. Some of these attributes are risk taking ability, ambition, great attitude, obsession to expand frontiers and team spirit”. He also encouraged students to be ethical and to follow code of conduct in every path they follow in life.
As a part of the convocation ceremony, a number of academic honors were handed to meritorious students. In the PGPM Energy (2014-2016) batch, gold medals were awarded to Mr. MohitKakkar for Academic Excellence and also for Best Outgoing Student. In PGPM batch (2015-2016), gold medals were awarded toMr. Nitesh Agrawal for Academic Excellence and Mr. Aditya Vats for Best Outgoing Student.
The ceremony was followed by a formal welcoming of the PGPM Class of 2016- 17 with the commencement address delivered by Guest of Honor, Dr. Sudhakar V. Balachandran, Professor at College of Business Administration, University of Illinois, Chicago.Dr. Sudhakar Balachandran expressed while delivering the commencement addressthat,“the most important aspect of MBA education process is that it is more like a transformation experience than an education experience”. Further he laid stress on importance of learning soft skills. He explained that “acquiring soft skills is as crucial as having technical skills”. He stated that “no leader was ever able to run an organization successfully without understanding his people”. He also advised students to respect themselves, their choices, peers,teachers and parents and strive for everything with full heart and sincerity.
