MBA – Mind and Body in alliance

August 19, 2016 | Posted by admin << back to blog

Aspire, Perspire and Inspire – a blog post by Amit Makhija (PGPM 2017)

Now that we are almost through the second term of our PGPM, every day brings us closer to our little sparkling goal in life. Group projects, coping with the assignments and chasing deadlines, we have now learnt to embrace new challenges every day.

Having spent almost 4 months at Great Lakes, I can now say that a one year MBA is no joke. Little did we imagine about the rigorous and hectic schedules which has become our way of life now. A couple of days in this campus, you start realizing the importance of being on your toes every moment of the day. There can never be a lazy day. But, are you equipped to face this challenge? Life in a B-School can put both your mind and body into test. It is only when both mind and body are in alliance; you can walk on this sky rope.

Sharing my own personal journey here, I wish to emphasize the importance of a sound body for a sound mind. To begin with, life at a B-School is not easy. The comfort zone ends when you step into the campus. Lot of sacrifices have to be made including the sleeping hours. Now if you are not as healthy as you should be, there goes all your plans for the future for the crazy lifestyle in a B-School will eventually take a toll on your body and mind.

I would like to share how my personal experience of concentrating on my fitness quotient helped me adapt to this lifestyle. Just a few months ago, I was obese and my health quotient was poor. I hardly spoke to anyone and kept to myself most of the times. Many people did not know that I existed. Though I wanted to lose weight for my own good, the thought of hitting the gym petrified me. After so many months of procrastination, I finally decided to give it a shot and that’s the best decision I have ever made.

My routine was simple. I watched what I ate and worked out in the gym regularly. With certain ups and downs, failing but trying again, and by putting efforts combined with discipline, I could reduce 26 kg in a span of 11 months. I can definitely say I am a better me today. It is not about the number of pounds you lose; it is all about the determination and will. It is about the focus and the drive to stay healthy. It is about understanding that the body and mind have to work together to go where you want to go. I can, without any doubt say that had I not developed this discipline to respect my body, life would have been complicated in a B-School. With pre-reads, quizzes, assignments, exams and projects that need constant churning of your mind, with limited sleeping hours and practically no day off, I wonder whether I would have endured if not for my good health.

An exercise doesn’t necessarily mean that we build our body and flash a daunting physical appeal. It means to strengthen our fitness quotient, develop stamina and build mental resilience. Rome was not built in a day. Hence following a routine enables us to build discipline and helps us to focus in whatever we do. If you are thinking to take care of your body, here are some baby steps – Walk or jog for at least 45 minutes a day, avoid junk food and eat food at regular intervals, drink plenty of water and most importantly don’t starve. What could also work is to identify diverse work-out routines and exercising together with other fitness enthusiasts.

Great Lakes is an amazing place which provides us with myriad options to get our dose of physical activity daily. We can choose from a vast variety of sports being played here, or going to the gym, or jogging around the beautiful campus, and get our share of adrenaline rush. These things aren’t done to prove yourself to the world but personal gratification is the reward you get here. As someone who has been on both sides, I can say it feels a lot better to be on the fitter side. It’s not easy but it’s all worth it. Let’s all strive to include some sort of physical activity in our busy lives here and stay ever more enthusiastic and on-the-go to achieve our goals. Great Lakes is the place which helps you nurture all your needs. Welcome to the B-School Town.
