To change your life, an MBA is vital

January 21, 2020 | Posted by BPR Team << back to blog

There is a saying, “India is a country where people first become engineers and then figure out what they want to become”. As any young Indian will be aware, our country churns out over 1.5 million engineers every year, and I was one of them.

During my years of studying engineering, I never got a chance to prove myself or to learn anything practical. All I ever did was learn various concepts through rote memorization. Our practical examinations were mostly theoretical. Halfway through my undergraduate degree, I lost interest in engineering and decided to pursue a career in other industry, and so I decided to do a postgraduate degree.

Why should you do an MBA?

There are a few standard responses to this question. One is that an engineer with a technical role should undertake an MBA to transition easily to a managerial role, and move up the corporate ladder. Secondly, MBA graduates get paid more than their pure engineering peers. But I beg to differ. Pursuing an MBA is not only about the money or position but also creating and implementing new ideas and practices that could possibly bring about a change in society.

After receiving my undergraduate degree, I interned at an HR consultancy firm while simultaneously preparing for the B-School entrance exams such as CAT, XAT and others. I joined a coaching class and I found that my classmates were just as aspirational as I was. 70-80% of the students who took the CAT were engineers and the test was divided into four sections: Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, in particular, was my strong suit and I did aced that section. The XAT was more of a decision-making paper which tested managerial skills.

Once the exam season ended, the next stage was the B-School interviews. Each school had its unique method of evaluation, which usually involved a group discussion, followed by a personal interview. Following this stage, I received offers from several schools but in the end, chose Great Lakes. This has turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.

The excellent faculty, the extraordinary Platinum-rated campus and the unique pedagogy have been, so far, the best any B-School can offer. Apart from academics, the school conducts numerous extracurricular activities. From participating in various committees to organising multiple events, Great Lakes has been a wonderful ride.

As an engineer, I made the right decision to pursue an MBA. I am learning to improve my managerial skills and make effective decisions.
