Great Lakes Identity – An amalgamation of corporate and family culture

Great Laker Suhas Krishnamoorthy from PGPM Class of 2018 blogs on the unique Great Lakes identity that makes it special and valuable for the student community.  

A fact that every Great Laker would agree to is, Great Lakes is a B-school which amalgamates the culture of a corporate and the culture of a family. This unique mixture of the two distant cultures leads to a feeling of connectedness among the students and the faculty, which in turn helps us to learn business with a different outlook. The school inculcates in every Great Laker, the ability to think rationally for taking business decisions without compromising on showing the empathy towards the environment and peers.

This blend of two cultures creates a sense of identity towards Great Lakes and each Great Laker feels proud to flaunt this quality embedded deep inside him/her. Speaking about corporate culture, Great Lakers are taught how to take data-driven decisions, think with an analytics’ hat on, encourage to come up with new business ideas, given feedback on performance right throughout the year, imbibe the sense of ownership for each task undertaken and so on. In such a competitive business world, every leader must be aware of the dynamically changing environment and adapt according to the changes to stay in the market; all the qualities mentioned above definitely has a positive impact on business level thinking which aids in having a competitive advantage over the other business school leaders in inception. We, the students of Great Lakes believe that the enriching business experience we get here is an excellent start towards building the skills required to build a better business world.

On the flip side, Great Lakers are also taught to show empathy towards each other and towards environment, to take rational business decision keeping in mind the adverse effects it could cause to the Mother Earth which is also known as eco-friendly business decisions, respect one other irrespective of caste/creed/ grade/age, keeping ethics in the core of every business decision and so on. If introspected carefully, it is clear that these qualities are actually inculcated by family members into their children. However, Great Lakes goes the extra mile to re-iterate and inculcate these essential qualities in the minds of future business leaders.

So, you might think how much and to what extent this cultural mix would impact the existing businesses?

The corporate culture is evolving and more focus is given to employee centricity, customer engagement, and CSR activities to protect the environment. Each of the above traits requires each member of the organization to be mentally aligned with these developing goals. In order to equip ourselves to face this changing corporate needs, we need to adapt our lives in such a way that we breathe, eat and live by this mixed culture. Here at Great Lakes, that is exactly what we experience. As the old saying goes ‘Drop by drop is a water pot filled’, we believe that the positive change in attitude brought about by this culture in every Great Laker will definitely prove to be a cumulative aid in evolving corporate culture.
