B-School Events and What They Do For You

April 11, 2016 | Posted by Great Lakes << back to blog

Campus to Corporate

American journalist, Margaret Fuller once quoted, “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader”. Business schools are the rearing grounds of these ‘readers’ or students of today and leaders of tomorrow. Subjects that are important to the world of business, such as Finance, Management and Human Resource Management can be learnt, albeit theoretically, through classroom lectures, projects and internships. However, interaction with the industry is what brings the real sense of the business world to these students.

Bridging the gap

Events that bring together industry captains and students of a B-school are the way forward in imparting relevant knowledge. In times where change is the only constant thing, industry exposure is how students can hope to grasp concepts of business and stay current. A  B-school student while having knowledge of the industry, might not exactly be ready to start his work on day one. Events and conferences are the first step in bridging this gap between campuses and the corporate.

Learning can come in many forms for the B-school student. The recent Human Conclave Management Conference hosted by GLIM, for instance, highlighted the importance of managing human capital. Here the learning came in the form knowledge of new re-engineering strategy adopted by the industry to manage people. The International Entrepreneurship Conference recognized the challenges behind being a successful entrepreneur and showcased winning ideas of the students. Students got to see a real-time SWOT analysis of their own business plans.

Apart from technical skills and knowledge, these conferences also cultivate the soft skills that required by the industry in a future leader. Interactions with the business community build confidence in students that gets them ready for the world outside their campus.

The two way bridge

Conferences and events held by B-schools are a two-way learning path; both for the students as well as the industry. Corporates that participate in B-school events also may come upon students who might have just the idea that they need to kick-start their business. Often, the outsider perspective that students bring towards a business helps them in donning the ideator hat.

Such events are a brilliant forum for corporate leaders who want to give back to the community and inspire students. Be it in the form of contests they can hold for the student community or through boosting the right kind of talent on campus. Events from the GLIM stable, such as the Entrepreneurship Conference and the Successful Women in Management conference try and do just that – involving the titans of the industry to contribute their expertise to the campus.

Industry interaction should not just be seen as a way to garner a successful placement record, the deeper role that it plays in development of the B-school’s students is more important.
