“Climate & Society- The emerging Challenges” by Mr. T.Ramaswamy , CMD Indian Bank.

One of the most exhaustive, comprehensive, cerebral and unimaginably superior lectures ever delivered on the topic ‘Climate & Society’.

Mr. Ramaswamy, in a serious tone, prophesied that the future would be bleak if the leaders of today cannot shed their inept reluctance in learning from the climate catastrophes of the past. The speaker observed that, we, the civilization of present times, are blessed with the technological sophistication that can distil clear patterns from the infinitely complex history.

Referring to Dr. Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s proposition “To build robustness into negative ones that occur, and being able to exploit positive ones”, he pointed out that it is vitally important to hear out opinions of critics and scientists both.  Taking leafs out of Al Gore’s climate campaign, Dr. Ramaswamy noted that the struggle to bear upon the nations, the gravity of situation on the climate front, has always been there.

In a different context, the speaker quoting Einstein “Not everything that counts can be counted…” cautioned us that in the fight to decode climate changes and their direct correlations to the rise and fall of civilizations, we may end up with conclusions the solutions to which might have slipped away from our hands by then.

The speaker also presented to us, the notion of Alarmists ( CO2 levels dominant) and the Deniers (influence of oceans and changes in sunlight). Here, he advised us that in our endeavour to find answers, we make provisions to hear from both the parties, not just in climate but elsewhere too.

About “Maunder Minimum-period of minimal sunspot activity”, the speaker spent some time ruminating on the monsoons of India, and whether there was a connection. About Marib Dam, Yemen built in 750 BC, upgraded in 1968, Dr. Ramaswamy took us through the rationale behind Yemen tribes moving away from the region following the collapse of the dam.

His lecture included tireless evocation of the forces behind the victims of Tambora volcanic explosion that resulted in crop failures, increased sulphur content in atmosphere, etc. Towards the end, the speaker ran us through the events surrounding Toba’s explosion (74000 yrs ago that killed all but 3000 people on the planet), the recent Tsunami, Global impacts of the El Nino southern oscillation that is depriving India of rainfall.

He also discussed at length, the theories of Eccentricity, precision, obliquity and their combined effect on climate; Thermohaline circulation; The 8.2 ka BP event 6250 BC, sudden cooling of northern hemisphere; 4.2 ka BPGiant release of ice bergs into the atlantic oceans ;ITCZ inter tropical convergence zone and thermal equator; Tipping points in earth’s climate system-chaotic tipping points; “runaway greenhouse dynamics”.

Dr. Ramaswamy ended his delightful lecture of epic proportions with Dr. Jared Diamond’s analysis of societies in his book “Collapse”.

                                               MEGA ALUMNI MEET

Mega Alumni meet is an annual event which brings together Great Lakes’ Alumni from various industries and geographies, having varied managerial experience, into the college campus. Great Lakes alumni is a fast growing network of dynamic and young professionals and future captains of the industry, creating new success stories in various walks of life. The event started with an insightful lecture from Uncle Bala and Professor Sriram. It was followed by a talk on Entrepreneurship by Mr. R Narayanan, Director 20-20 Media. Mr. Narayanan, who has been part of multiple startups, gave some very lucid and pertinent lessons on Entrepreneurship from his experiences. Then, Mr. J.Krishnan, Ex CEO and President - Deccan Chargers gave an attention-grabbing speech on the similarity of Cricket and Corporate Management. He emphasized through examples from Cricket the importance of a frank and open feedback rather than an indirect one which is prevalent in the corporate world today. We also had a product talk by Ms. Sanjana Reddy from Godrej.

Thirty minutes of power packed talk by Prof. Venkat R. Krishnan went on redefining politics which is now understood in a derogatory sense. The talk on “Managing Corporate Politics” by the professor emphasized on the fact that there can be politics which can be used to climb up the ladder of success without indulging in malpractices. He also talked about Impression Management, which happens to be one of the courses in Great Lakes’ curriculum. He said that we all have an impression about ourselves and tend to be bound by its limitations. But the fact is that we just have to believe in what we want to be. Just by believing and acting accordingly one will develop that quality in oneself and one’s impression about oneself will change. The alumni, all of whom are in very prominent positions, truly benefitted from this talk as it is something they face daily.

Following such a charged up speech was time to have an experience sharing session by next generation entrepreneurs- Our Alumni, on their start up ventures. All of them had dreamt throughout, of being an entrepreneur and Great Lakes was the medium which channelized their dream to transform to reality. To name their ventures, Escapade by Divya Singaravelu & Joseph; Jade Magnet by Sitashwa; Prosel Ventures Ltd by Adith Kumar; Binarch.com by Guru Prasanna; Smartlearn Web TV.com by Vidhya Shankar. All of them left the students at Great Lakes enthralled and motivated that you just have to believe in your dream and catch the right bus, everything else follows.

The Alumni were mesmerized by the Life@GreatLakes videos of their respective batches.

Then came the time for some fun. The Patriots and alumni took part in a Treasure hunt which instantly made them feel at home in the new campus. It was 6 in the evening but the spirits were still high. Now came the moment for some social networking.  An awesome beach party with music and off course enticing dining options awaited the Great Lakers. In the end it was a day Great Lakers would remember and look forward to; a time to strengthen the bond with their Alma Mater!

Mr. S. D. Shibulal, COO Infosys Technologies

On

Technology and innovation
31st December, 2009

Great Lakes institute of Management today played host to one of the leading lights to our generation. Entrepreneurship wasn’t this close to Great Lakes, when one of the cofounders of Infosys visited the sprawling campus. Dr. Bala V Balachandran, Dean Great Lakes introduced the guest by referring to the spirit of entrepreneurship that we know as Infosys today. Over the next hour and a half Mr. Shibulal took the cohort on a journey of five global trends sweeping the world and in turn changing the way we live, work and enjoy our lives.

First major trend discussed was the tremendous growth of telecommunications. Gone are the days of endless waits of trunk calls, instant access is the new age mantra. This phenomenon has single handedly leveled information access for both the haves and have-nots.

Second trend mentioned was the Connectivity-paradigm. Global delivery model that Infosys started with wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for the technology ecosystem available at the time. This has made innovation a phenomenon of not just developed economies but developing ones too. Gone are the days of monopoly of innovation.

Third trend was the changing demographics, especially the aging of populations in USA, Japan among others. This has definitely made health care the most talked about topic today. Technology can help by developing smarter medical devices. In response to question about another off shoot of this phenomenon, audience responded with Knowledge management in organizations. Mr. Shibulal later explained how aging of the working population would strain the knowledge transition processes in organization.

Fourth major global trend was Sustainability. With Copenhagen as backdrop, this point cannot be emphasized more. Increasingly, major corporations understand the implications of green practices. As an example speaker mentioned how power utilities would seize to remain unidirectional and instead develop into multidirectional multidimensional model.

At last the speaker mentioned the trend of smarter organizations. Citing Infosys as an example, from its infancy as Infosys gained size, complexity of the processes increased. This increase was not linear but exponential, and this underlying fact of increasing complexity is what companies world over are trying to solve. How to make organizations less complex? The speaker went on to elucidate the characteristics of smart organizations and four dimensions of such organizations: simple, adaptable, learning and sustainable.

The floor was then opened to questions and discussions flowed from the corporate governance, sustainability to business consulting and coming of age of Indian IT industry. The audience was awed by the depth of the session and by the presence of a stalwart of Indian entrepreneurial zeal. Indeed a truly remarkable evening to remember.

Dr. Venkat Krishnan opened the day long session with his eloquent praise for critical thinking. He opined that the evidence based management techniques are all pervasive but ill embraced. The speaker held the industry culpable for their reserved stand and intransigent mood- performance appraisal techniques force fit the employees into predefined brackets despite the fact that empirical evidence points to the fallacy of the process. Dr. Krishnan, quoting examples from the famous article on evidence based management, greeted all the guests with a warm welcome.

Dr. Bala V. Balachandran inviting the guests, extended gratitude to the members present for their share in rendering NASMEI (North American Society for Marketing Education in India) event a great success. Event NASMEI conducted on December 18-19, 2009 is third Great Lakes-NASMEI Marketing Conference. Dr. Balachandran appealed to the students to lay greater emphasis on empirical based research, with those words he wished the guests from academia, industry and the police force a great success.

Dr. Shyamsundar in his presentation on CNT, theorised that the consumption, numbers and time define the landscape of our planet’s future. Pointing to the evidence on the screen, the speaker asserted that it is too late to react let alone recover the decimation of natural resources including water throughout the planet. In a different context, the speaker shared hope for a better future, a future with management trainees and engineers from reputed schools and colleges of our nation pursuing careers in research and teaching professions.

Dr. Seenu Srinivasan presented a research paper on ‘Marketing of services’. His presentation included his express critique on the incompatibility of some of the empirical techniques available for his research. This, the speaker professed, fuelled the need for a novel technique-ASEMAP. Dr. Srinivasan presented the findings of his study and answered queries from the audience.

Ms. Vasanthi Srinivasan from IIM, Bangalore explored the roles of government, non-profit organisations and explored the current trend of later eating into the former’s share. Quoting examples from Infosys, Bharti and Wipro, speaker commented on the need to distinguish between criticism and critical thinking. She observed that the former differed from the later insofar that the later required the thinker to state the problem in such a way that it allows for a solution.

Prof. Siva Nathan speaking on ‘Innovations from India to the west’ referred to GE’s reverse innovation practices. He asserted that the MNCs no longer consider India and other developing nations as markets to explore the boundaries of ‘economies of scale’. Today, all the developing nations including India are seen as breeding grounds for innovation.

Mr. Navniet Sekera opened his speech on a provocative note. In response to his fairly innocuous question ‘what is the maximum lending rate of finances in India?’ audience responded with a 50%,100% and a preposterous 200% at one time. But, the speaker announced 3650% under his breath and thus prepared ground for one of the most fascinating speeches of the day. The speaker steered the audience that was recovering from the recent shock, into the lands of Indian police force. Through his rich anecdotal experiences, Mr. Sekera asserted that ‘problems are assets for a leader’. He finished with an earnest request to all the guests -- share, share whatever you can, share your wealth, share your knowledge, share your time .... share whatever you have to share, if you have nothing to share, at least have a heart to share...

Mr. Gerrit De Vylder spoke on how India has been an inspiration for Europe throughout history. He noted that the gradual erosion of traditional values in Europe drove the people in a quest for newer outlook of the worldview. Indian spirituality, Mr. Vylder observed, has filled the vaccum thus created in Europe.

The day included presentations of research articles from other students, academicians and researchers who flew from all parts of India just for the occasion.

This includes technology partnership with institution like IIT-Madras and other technology firms, public partnership with ICGAR foundation, venture funding partners as NEN, TiE and other renowned venture funds. All of them and many more will join hands with Great Lakes Institute of Management to form i-Lab, to create the missing link of Entrepreneurship.

i-Lab will provide a unique platform for the idea & dressing it up into a Start firm through Business modeling. A business model describes the rationale of how organization creates, delivers, and captures value. The term business model is thus used for a broad range of informal and formal descriptions to represent core aspects of a business, including purpose, offerings, strategies, infrastructure, organizational structures, trading practices, and operational processes and policies. It is the building block for any startup firm and getting the model right for the startup is crucial. Surprisingly 99 percent of the firms have no clear framework for describing their model. i-Lab will create this missing link.

i-Lab B-Modeling Process

i-Lab vision is to create the missing link of Entrepreneurship which meant for providing a platform for capable youth to make their Entrepreneurship dream come true. Here is how the business modeling process of i-Lab will work:

  1. I2O: The process will start with I2O, in which the idea of the person will be validated to become an opportunity. An opportunity is marketable and sustainable idea.
  2. B-modeling: After that phase, i-Lab will help in prototyping the idea in which a small prototype will be made for testing and validation of the idea and to showcase the opportunity to the real world and VCs.
  3. Ecosystem Integration: After that integration process will happen in which the budding entrepreneur will be exposed to various external partners of i-Lab which will help in investments, management and technology solution of the venture.

Mr. Manohar Parrikar, Hon. Leader of opposition, Goa on “Leadership, Good governance & Management”

Executive Director Prof. Sriram opened the session with his eloquent display of warm welcome to the guest. He remarked that the decision to enter politics for any individual shrinks in relevance and the individual belittles politics, for the image that the field has gathered over years is anything but pretty. He showered praise on the guest for such an audacious decision.

Mr. Parrikar’s speech began on a note of flirtatious humour, oscillated through the trenches of bureaucratic imagery and political despondence before finally resting on the firm shoulders of his talk on leadership. “I told my ministers; Finance and Education sectors would rest with me. Former everyone clamoured for, agreed after thorough examination of pros and cons but later no one cared for” reminisced the speaker of his first day in office as CM. Responding to a question from the audience, speaker asserted that “Education precedes population in the list of priorities for the progress of our nation”. Education rips past every other parameter and sits right on top, such was the firm contention of the speaker. In referring to Bureaucrats, the speaker claimed that “Bureaucracy is the water in that glass” pointing to the glass before him, he continued “water takes the colour and taste of the politicians”.

Referring to oft cited comparison between CEO and CM, he mentioned a CEO can choose his team but a Chief Minister doesn’t have similar freedom. This is when leadership is very important. Giving anecdotes of 1965 war with Pakistan and Kargil he mentioned the importance of leading from the front. He emphasised the pivotal role character plays in the development of a leader.

Through his amazing recollections of adorable short stories, he observed that a leader is one who is “literate, educated and wise”. Through the gripping tale of a herdsman and a consultant, he mimicked the ostentatious outpour of extravagance which could have been avoided. Later, he narrated few anecdotes of his, and through them demonstrated to the audience, the power of “leadership with focus”. In response to another inquisitive patriot (class of 2010), Mr. Parrikar noted that bureaucrats have to made accountable, and this act he contended, would lead to the progress of nation.

The program ended with Prof. Veeravalli’s vote of thanks.

His Holiness, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at Great Lakes Institute of Management

Sri Sri speaking about 7 areas of excellence for IndiaHis Holiness, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, blessed the green campus of the Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai, with his divine presence. The occasion was the inauguration of the latest addition to Great Lakes Family: MILK (Meditation and Inspiration Center for Living and Kindness).
Guruji began the session emphasizing the need of innovation and creativity in the betterment of the society. He opined that when we talk about management, we confine ourselves to controlling (managing) what has already been created. But, life will be too dull, and in short, lifeless, if there were nothing new. It would be like a dead body, beautifully decorated, and dressed, and being taken to its grave. The only thing that can infuse life in this dead body is creativity and innovation, and hence all should rise up to take the risk of creating/ doing new things.

Guruji also highlighted the importance of meditation in our life. He was of the opinion that we, Indians, should rise up to take the ownership of whatever belongs to us. To illustrate his point, he said that there are 7 areas, namely: Vast Variety of Food, Dresses and Jewelry, Meditation and Yoga, Ayurveda and herbs, Historical Monuments, Dances and Values and ethics.

These are our core competencies. But, since we are not taking a collective ownership of our precious belongings, outsiders get a chance to exercise their claim on it. For example, the Market for Yoga, and Yoga related products in United States alone is a multibillion dollar industry, and 90% of it has been claimed by local American residents. Right from books on yoga, to yoga mats, none are made by Indians there, and we share only a minuscule part of the market that should have been entirely ours.

Guruji also observed that though, we Indians have immense talent, but we fail to market ourselves and our talent, and that is the reason why, despite such great, non-replicable assets that we have, our market share in international tourism is pretty low.

The audience was filled with curiosity and asked quite intriguing questions which Guruji answered in his calm composed demeanor.

Lock Stock and Trade at Great Lakes:

Great Lakes, with the firing mechanism- a coruscating metallic lock (the biggest mock IPO event); fitted on the wooden butt end -stock of the gun (20 acres green campus); Powered with nine cylindrical smoking barrels (seven of these were Great Lakes teams) fired incessantly for over eight hours.

Even as the met department issued signs of warning, even as the torrential rain consumed the east coast road, Great Lakers escorted the enemy tanks (teams from other institutions) to the war zone. And, soon it began.

Prof. R.S. Veeravalli-Director Executive MBA, opened the event with the characteristic elegance and composure that he is known for. Welcoming the guests, he quipped that Great Lakes has been busy praying for rain this morning, so the visitors would remember the day for a life time. He later remarked that the memorable day has been made possible by the judges who have confirmed to be on the panel, and expressed his deepest gratitude for making to the event despite the deluge.

Judges:

  1. Srinivasan Vishwanathan, partner at Apt Talent Partners, Inc
  2. K. Ramakrishnan, Executive Director & Head, Spark Capital
  3. Mr. R. Narayan, VP, HDFC Bank

Mr. Vishwanathan recalling his meeting with Dr. Bala V. Balachandran (Dean and founder of Great Lakes), noted that his visit to Great Lakes has been a memorable one. He observed “I have not seen such an event anywhere else. Perhaps this is one of its kind; a unique one”. Later he spoke about the sea change in the style of investing today, from what it had been twenty years prior to now. In this context, he noted “I think it was Reliance that changed the way we looked at stocks”. Moving on, he explored the rationale behind the shift. Technology, he opined, shrunk the product life cycles and has brought in short term focus.

The event began with all the teams presenting the companies they represented while investors sifted in their minds, their priorities.

T. S. Eliot resignedly postulated in 1915 (albeit in a different context)

Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse

Every one of us, ones playing investors, ones representing the nine companies, all of us submitted to neurotic indecisiveness in the face of suffocating intensity of the game as the event began.

Every single minute, someone in a corner somewhere in the big hall of three hundred switched his priorities of investment. The worried ones left the hall to sip hot coffee in Bajaj Bistro, the jubilant ones sat meditatively staring at the steel structure in the India Cements Amphitheater.

And, so it went on for over eight hours.

‘Frugal Marketing’ by Jessie Paul, Chief Marketing Officer, Wipro Technologies

Ms. Jessie Paul with her almost effortless soothing voice presented to the class, the microcosm of brand building exercise. She asserted that the purer and traditional modes of marketing are increasingly becoming predictable, whereas the newer, innovative and unconventional practices (owing to their novelty, accessibility, flexibility and frugality) are mostly sought after in the current times. The speaker proffered on the patriots (class of 2010), a challenge-to define one’s uniqueness. Patriots conferred with the speaker; the session was more of an interaction than a guest lecture.

Pointing to the matrix (an adaptation of BCG matrix) on the presentation, she advised the class to identify the firms that they wish to work with, in one of the quadrants. This exercise, she promised, would reveal surprising revelations, and would aid one in career planning. She shared her knowledge of Yahoo’s traditional mass advertising campaigns in contrast to the frugal advertising adopted by Google.

In response to a question from one of the patriots, she replied that, one need not be the best in a huge expanse of space and time; one only has to narrow the space that one wishes to ascribe oneself with. She contended that by narrowing the space down, it becomes easier to define our uniqueness, which (in a much wider space) must have appeared fallible.

The speaker, in her well structured presentation, slowly took to the arduous task of preparing groundwork in answering the fundamental questions – Who am I? Why buy me? Why not buy someone else? - She implied that a brand map of an individual is no different from the brand map of a product or service.

Ms. Paul observed that though firms fudge the figures, the educated consumers of today would pay no heed to unverifiable proofs. Extending the train of thought a little further, she advised patriots that their abilities would remain merely claims in the eyes of a recruiter if they are not verifiable.

Towards the end of the session, Ms. Paul remarked that it is perhaps easier to sell experience than to sell the product itself. She noted that Padmasree Warrior on twitter is trusted more than any TV commercial. In reference to executive branding, the speaker noted that Barack Obama epitomized the whole brand building exercise.

Ms. Paul ended the session contending that social media would continue to dominate the world of marketing in the years to come.

Mr. Srivatsa Krishna, IAS on India’s second war of independence-Making Infrastructure happen

Mr. Srivatsa Krishna presented to the class, facts about India’s dominance in the world. He shared with us, figures on the infrastructure spending of India. And, he commented on the stark contrast between the two. Referring to some of the major and successful infrastructure programs of the recent times, such as the Golden Quadrilateral road network, he observed that the progress is palpable. Speaking about Gujarat’s GIFT project, he expressed his optimism on India’s predominance in the years to come.

The speaker observed that India’s spending on infrastructure is dismally low. He ascribed this state of inept approach towards the most defining parameter of progress of a nation, partly to the underpinning of democratic framework in our nation. He contended that, although corrupt politics are to blame, the private sectors cannot be left out of the sphere of culpability. Furthermore, he cautioned that the reliance on private sectors is neither the panacea nor is the efficacy of private sector involvement over the public sectors empirically proved.

He later turned his attention towards the systematic adulation of India in comparison to China. He argued that the two nations operate on radically different philosophies and the comparison is not only facetious at the face of it but also fallacious. He pointed out that the Shatabdi express, India’s fastest train travels at 130km/hr against the 430 km/hr train of China. He also commented on the phenomenal growth of infrastructure sector in the city of Shenzhen, which grew from a mere nothingness to a mammoth city of 3984 sky scrappers.

Mr. Krishna explained that the democratic framework that runs through the fabric of our society is omnipresent, omniscient and has protected us from the viral foreign invasions. But, democracy comes with a price, and the price is the gradual and selective progress (as in India) as opposed to the rapid development (as in China). To substantiate the point, quoting from his experience, he noted that the Chinese government in their ‘land acquisition’ operations paints the local houses in red, yellow, white and the authorities with unquestionable power of the rule proceed to dismantle the houses without paying heed to the plight of the people living in the houses. But, here in India, land acquisitions are painfully slow. From his anecdotal experience, he quoted the hilarious episode of three individuals in Hyderabad claiming the hussain sagar lake, in response to the government’s land acquisition orders in the city.

With a wild tiger exuding grandeur in the background in his presentation, the speaker concluded the session by asking us ‘The tiger is roaring, India is ready, are you?’

Mr. Shiva Subramaniam, former consultant in creative learning and innovation for Tata Consultancy Services and Ms. Mrunalini on “Thinking About Creativity”

Mr. Shiva Subramanian, in a passionate lecture professed to the students of Great Lakes, the need for refining the thinking process. He ideated the thinking process in class, holding a bottle of Bisleri in his hand. And, he exclaimed “Is there anyone in this world who cannot be creative?”

Ms. Mrunalini with her placating voice and charming air delicately steered the lecture onto the right course. Drawing parallels between her industry experience and the classroom ‘knowledge sharing’, she and Mr. Subramanian epitomized the wealth of creative conflagration that they believed (and made us believe by the end of the lecture) was hidden in everyone of us.

Mr. Subramanian, speaking about his visit to Sri Lanka on a project with the Indian Cricket team under Rahul Dravid’s leadership, observed that the “six hats” apparatus of thinking is infallible. But he cautioned that being wary of the tool-six hats, might not be fruitful all the time. For, he explained that human beings are not impulsive or instinctive, but learn through experience. Human beings follow the routines that have been put to rigorous tests through the generations and apply them, the whole civilization runs on the application of these tested models. Instinctive behaviour is too slippery to create platforms for great civilizations such as us.

In a different context, Mr. Subramanian, through the example of Xerox, showed to the class that inventive minds, the creative minds should not be bogged down by the impediments of societal constructs, but have to swim against them. Relentless persistence after eight years resulted in one of the greatest and smartest works of copying paper-xerox. He advised us to bear in mind, the fact that necessity need not always precede invention. In fact, more often than not, it is the invention that precedes the necessity. Xerox is one such example, Edison’s phonograph is another example, and Einstein’s general theory of Relativity is a classic example.

The speaker implored the Great Lakers to be creative, use the “six hats” technique to streamline the thinking process, and lastly use the “lateral thinking” device to coax oneself out of the box.

Interpol’s International Drug Expert Mr. Ramachandra Sundaralingam on ‘Drug trade & Drug addiction’

Mr. Ramachandra Sundaralingam’s lecture had an air of investigation, and was filled with rich anecdotal references interspersed with the ominous nature of future awaiting the progeny. He shared with us, the ‘global drug trafficking’ scenario; modes of mischief and notoriety that Italian, Columbian and Russian mafia are known for.

He pointed out that the fall of Berlin wall was a moment of significance, a milestone for the future generations to look back upon us and ruminate. But, he remarked ‘today, the mafia, by their contrived use of global platforms has made the episode of globalization, a terrible curse’. From his 17 years of service with the Interpol as a police officer, he observed that the fall of communism and the globalization thereof have been the most catalytic moments that throttled the drug trafficking and propelled it into new heights hitherto impossible.

Mr. Sundaralingam commented on the plight and pitiful state of some of the undeveloped nations and their exposure to drug trafficking. Quoting from his experience, he noted that ‘80% of cocaine is produced in Columbia, 80% of heroin from Afghanistan’. He added that the UN mandate aimed at reducing both the supply and demand for drugs.  The incorrigible nature of drug traffickers and addicts is such that they have, in the compulsive mood, committed horrendous crimes and misdemeanors. Speaking of Afghanistan, he remarked that ‘of two sons in a family in Afghanistan, one embraces al-Qaeda and the other opium’. He added that smitten with poverty, drained of hunger, eclipsed by grief, the people of the nation have took to producing opium.

With reference to the death of a plastic surgeon in Mexico, Mr. Sundaralingam remarked that the cap to humanity is smeared; the drug addicts and traffickers are individuals of lacerated self esteem, they have become prey to the powerful trade, they are rid of curiosity, they have become impervious to the lives of people that they have victimized. The speaker then spent some time on the methods of concealment and the training schools of drug traffickers.

In culminating the momentous lecture, he pointed to the screen with two legends-one of Sachin Tendulkar, and the other Osama Bin Laden. A 12 year old in Afghanistan, thrown into the corner of a decrepit, misogynistic, malevolent, pestilential and metamorphosed society, finds refuge in AK-47, burns a house here, and kills a man there, aspiring to become Osama Bin Laden one day. While the class awaited in silence that put a serene lake in shame, he turned around, cleared his throat and observed that a 12 year old in India, with MRF bat in his hand, whirls the timber in cramped streets of every city in the country, breaking a glass window here, a car’s window there, and dreams of becoming Sachin Tendulkar one day.

He implored us all to respect the tradition that India is host to, the culture and family values by their inherent apparatus have saved us from the capricious minds outside. But, the fashionable western trends are burning holes into the ozone protection of family values that we stake our lives against. Mr. Sundaralingam prodded us, to embrace the culture that we are, and not dilute the atmosphere that piques the curiosity of the young ones, that lets the young ones dream of becoming Sachin Tendulkar one day.

Mr. Francis Alapatt, Atulya Development Associates Pvt. Ltd on ‘The science of selling’

Mr. Francis Alapatt delivered a passion filled lecture on ‘the science of selling’. In his lecture, he explored the ‘cliches’ associated with ‘selling’ in the businesses and the market environment. Pointing to the brown leather bag by the table, he remarked ‘I like to carry my bag that represents the old sales man bag’. He added ‘the philosophy of selling is undergoing a major transformation in the present times’. Selling according to Mr. Alapatt is no longer the job of persuading the customer, cajoling or coaxing him into buying the product or service. He opined that selling encompasses a whole gamut of requirements in businesses. ‘selling is the culmination of marketing’, he noted that selling in isolation is merely selling, but through the integration and coordination ‘selling’ spawns a new life;  a synergetic solution to the monolithic integrated whole-marketing & selling.

He observed later that ‘Marketing brings the horse to water or vice versa. Selling makes it drink’. In a different context, he expressed his apoplectic reaction to the phrase ‘sales people are feet on street’. He added ‘Marketing prepares the ground for sales team; some roads are frictionless, refined and polished to the extent that sales team swishes past their competitors. But, other roads are rugged, for marketing failed to polish the road, and sales team has an uphill task in such a case’.

Mr. Alapatt demonstrated to the class, human behaviours and instincts, by blindfolding 30 volunteers from the class and letting them on an exercise for fifteen minutes. Mr. Alapatt ended with the observation ‘selling skills are not merely persuasive skills but skills that focus on gaining commitment- to a product, a proposal or an idea’.

Mr. T.Ramaswamy, DGM Indian Bank on ‘Global Economic Meltdown’
One of the most exhaustive, comprehensive, cerebral and unimaginably superior lectures ever delivered on the topic ‘Global Economic Meltdown’.

Mr. T. Ramaswamy, quoting Einstein “I can predict the motion of the stars but not the markets” commented on the economic downturn of the recent times. He remarked on the placid latitudes such as people bemoaning at the inability of the able and best minds of our times in failing to predict the catastrophe and the cascading effect thereof.

Quoting Irving Fisher “I fancy that over-confidence seldom does any great harm except when, as, and if, it beguiles its victims into debt”, he claimed that the economic catastrophe was indeed speculated by many a people. To substantiate his point, he furthered us proofs from ‘The Economist’ magazine that anticipated the housing bubble way back in 2004; article from OECD, IMF in 2004-05; Prediction by Economists Nouriel Roubini & Robert Shiller. Commenting on the behaviour of people during the times of these publications, he said the general population was undergoing the ‘psychology of denial’.

Mr. Ramaswamy commented on the evolutionary characteristics of human brain. Pointing out to the studies made in various fields such as behavioral psychology, evolutionary biology and sociology, he exclaimed that it was the reptilian brain (prime mover of emotions) covered under thick shadows cast by the dog’s brain (the prime mover of loyalty) and rational brain (prime mover of rationality) that forms the rationale behind all the behaviours of humanity and certainly the behaviour of buyers and sellers in markets. He added ‘Rational brain waits, but the reptilian brain seeks instant gratification, and eventually the rational brain is foreshadowed subconsciously by the preponderance of the impulsive and instinctive reptilian brain’.

Quoting from ‘Mean Markets and Lizard Brains’, “the key to our biological success is the source of our financial difficulties”, he observed that the bizarre ‘herd instinct’ of markets can be explained from the evolution of human brain. In further to his assertion, quoting from the same book “Our lizard brains made us all financial risk junkies”, he noted that the explanation can also be derived from other fields of study such as Sigmund Freud’s ‘Id’ and ‘Ego’. Freudian study indicates that the ‘constant state of flux’ of the external environment puts the bridge between ‘Id’ and ‘Ego’ at risk. Freud contended that ‘Ego’ gets carried away by the external environment, while the ‘Id’ is stationary.

To finish the jig saw puzzle, he pulled out exploratory studies from rich and diverse fields by men such as ‘Michio Kaku’ and ‘Jared Diamond’. The speaker claimed that the 1930s recessionary scenario is strikingly similar to the present one, for the Debt to GDP ratio of US in 1930 was close to 300%, and presently it is around 350%. He added that India’s ratio that stand at a fairly decent rate-140%, coupled with the demographical advantage we are bound to see in the next two decades, would certainly propel us into periods of progression.

In a different context, he quoted from ‘collapse of complex societies’, commented on the ‘Medici Effect’, and pointed out that diversity spawns hitherto unrealized intellectual episodes. He commented on the lives of ‘Leonardo da Vinci’, ‘Michelangelo’. On his explorations into Carlota Perez’s studies, Mr. Ramaswamy professed that after every catastrophe or a crisis, there comes a period of progression. The tremendous display of awe and vigor in our countenances was a manifestation of the great lecture that ended with the speaker’s contention ‘for younger generation of today, there is a gold mine awaiting you’.

HR Conclave 2009

Dr. Bala V. Balachandran inviting the guests pointed out ‘students of the last batch felt an urgent need for a platform to exchange ideas between industries and institutions. HR Conclave is Great Lakes’ designed platform for HRs from all the verticals of the business world to come together and share their ideas with the institution’. He added ‘With the preponderance of Great Lakes, Chennai is presently leading the race for the title ‘Knowledge Capital of India’. The city of Chennai shares the title with Bangalore and Hyderabad’. He welcomed the guests and added ‘I am pleased at the progress we have made so far, but we are not complacent and would strive to improvise with every passing year’.

Mr. R. Seshasayee noted that it was delightful to watch Dr. Bala sing an emotion filled Tamil song. He drew leafs out of the story- with a father and his quarrelling sons attempting to break sticks when they are separate and when the sticks are all packed closely together- in explaining the characteristic ‘oneness of an organization’. He commented on the findings made by Marine biologists ‘Communication travels to over 700 miles in fish when they sense danger’. He added ‘The ‘symmetrical patterns’ in coral reefs is an astonishing example of communication’. Extending his argument to the organization level, he remarked ‘to deal with rational and emotional problems separately and the relentless pursuits thereof is the challenge lying before HR professionals in an organization’.

Mr. Srini Raj commented on the general platitude ‘this century is ours; this century belongs to Indians’. He observed ‘In 1900 BC, again in 500 AD, India was the greatest country in the whole world’. He added ‘India will have the largest base of young population in another 20 years’. He commented on the demographical advantage that the country would enjoy, but felt apprehensive about our abilities to squeeze mileage out of the situation. He observed ‘Young professionals often set goals to get placed in a visionary company, but the goals are flawed, for once placed they have achieved their goals and would not know what to make out of it henceforth’. He advised us to pursue the course of setting up companies, although risky, he commented ‘when you are young, you can afford to go wrong’.

Mr. S. Ramakrishnan commented on the flawed practices in HR. He observed ‘people who are written off in an organization often excel at a later point in time’. He also commented on the credence that we lay upon the credibility of exams such as CAT, GRE in judging the potential of a student. He argued that the exams might be excellent yardsticks at measuring the subset of a student’s intelligence, but are fallible, for the scale is representative of a niche quality of the student and never the whole. He noted that sportsmen, musicians and creative artists are all epitomes of niche potential exhibition, and hence to ascribe ‘intelligence’ as totality to any individual based on a single yardstick (that only measures single attribute) is a logical fallacy.

Mr. Ravishankar, in his presentation commented about the practices at HCL. He noted that in times of economic depression HCL declared that ‘no HCLite will be left behind’. He further mentioned that the statement in testing times was a manifestation of a truly admirable philosophy that HCL ascribes to. He added ‘we create home in office, the salsa classes, the internal matrimony site, the blogs and various other novel and innovative practices speak volumes about our organization’s HR practices’.

Our Placement Director Mr. Krishna Ram invited the guests to share their thoughts on questions pertaining to the day’s theme. He asked ‘Is there a mathematical model to gauge the employees?’, ‘how can one measure the efficacy and effectiveness of HR practices?’, ‘Can the attrition signals be captured before time and be acted upon? Do we have models for the same?’, ‘Has HR ever told their CEOs that later drew obscene amount of salaries?’, ‘Why are HRs averse to rotational policies? Why don’t they work in Marketing or Finance sectors for a while?’ And, he threw the floor open.

JP Desai in his unconventional approach, spoke on the theme ‘How to create an adaptive organization?’, he contended that the brightest minds could not predict or avoid the latest economic depression. He drew parallels between Evolution – Cambrian extinction that destroyed all the species but a few-, pointing to the graph, he noted ‘there is a striking similarity between the organizations’ decimation and the species’ decimation. He added ‘99% of all the organizations that ever existed are now extinct’. He concluded that we can draw lessons from nature; organizations have a life, just as a species does.

Mr. Durjoy Patranabish, speaking on the theme ‘HR model is changing from multinational to global’ remarked that ‘the economic scenario has led to rapid employee growth in emerging markets’. He added ‘the last couple of years have also been the stimulants for several broad changes in the external global business environment’. He reflected ‘Today, hiring approach should be focused on both IQ and EQ’.

Ms. Richa Gulati, quoting from Edward De Bono observed ‘the downturn provided us all a necessity to innovate’. She saw credibility in a fusion between ‘Conventional cost management solutions and ‘creative cost management solutions’. She commented on ‘gearing for the upturn, challenges in sustaining employee engagements and retention’. She concluded with the key message ‘think new, think different’.

Mr. Punit, in his passion filled exuberant display of debunking platitudes, shared with us the story of Indian Armed Forces; their readiness to adversities and their celebrations of the same. He noted ‘Armed forces embrace adversities, how many organizations can cross their chests and proudly say that they have been waiting for the bad times’.

Professor Sriram brought the day’s proceedings to an end with ‘vote of thanks’. He expressed his sincere thanks to all the keynote speakers of the day, guests and the HR Conclave team.

K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty, IAS, Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Govt. of Tamil Nadu on “Management and Insights from Machiavelli and Shakespeare”

K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty, IAS, Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Govt. of Tamil Nadu

Mr. K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty opened the session with a humorous quote made by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru; slightly paraphrased, Nehru said “Indian Civil Service is neither Indian nor civil and not much of a service either”. Mr. Shetty contended that the management studies of the present times are a mere mirror images of the poets, play writers and philosophers of the past. He noted that the great thinkers of the past have ruminated, conferred and confuted the happenings of the most bizarre and inexplicable traits of human behaviors throughout their lives. History is a manifestation of his contention. He opined that the present management dogmas are clouded and embellished with fashionable jargons, but shredded to core they are but the very principles the great thinkers have proffered on the progeny.

Bala V. Chandran Dean Great Lakes Institute of Management and K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty, IAS, Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Govt. of Tamil Nadu on “Management and Insights from Machiavelli and Shakespeare”

Quoting the Italian Philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli, Mr. Shetty observed that the CEOs, leaders and managers of today are but merely the kings and princes of the times of Machiavelli, and hence, he asserted thus ‘the studies of Machiavelli and Shakespeare, in their truest and most accessible parts are not only pleasurable and immensely delightful to study and reflect upon, but also uniquely insightful for management students’. In a different context, he quoted Machiavelli’s reply to question “Whether it is better for a prince to be loved or feared” and noted that it is important that leaders are both feared and loved, but care has to be taken that leaders are not feared to the extent that fear turns into hatred.

In reference to Machiavelli’s reply to the question “which is preferable: a good commander with a weak army or a weak army with a good commander”, Mr. Shetty remarked that ‘an organization with a good CEO and inferior subordinates is better than inferior CEO with good subordinates’. Extending the Philosopher’s train of thought from 1531 A.D to the present times, he quoted Machiavelli “In times of difficulty men of merit are sought after, but in easy times it is not men of merit, but such as have riches and powerful relations that are most in favor”. The speaker drew startling parallels of the quote with the Indian cricket team’s persistence on Rahul Dravid’s inclusion in the team when the team is in dire straits, but immediately dispensing him after the passage of the tough time.

K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty, IAS, Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Govt. of Tamil Nadu on “Management and Insights from Machiavelli and Shakespeare” Great Lakes Institute of Management

The speaker’s powerful reflection on the Italian philosopher ended with quoting the lesson for which Machiavelli is thought of as cunning and deceitful-“A prince must imitate the fox and the lion, for the lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. One must therefore be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves. Those that wish to be only lions do not understand this. Therefore, a prudent ruler ought not to keep faith when by so doing it would be against his interest, and when the reasons which made him bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this precept would not be a good one; but as they are bad, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith with them”.

Quoting Shakespeare “O, it is excellent to have a giant's strength, but it is tyrannous to use it like a giant”, Mr. Shetty noted that CEOs, leaders and managers all alike have an innate predilection; to show an affinity towards power. He advised us to skillfully avoid becoming a prey to the suffocating brilliance of ‘power’ in manipulating the animal instincts in us. In reference to Hamlet “Ay, sir; to be honest, as this world goes, is to be one man picked out of ten thousand”, the speaker opined that the world at large is beguiling and seductive of murky and conspiratorial activities. He continued and added that material discomfort can be fashionably articulated and framed into an excuse for not taking decisions. In this context, he quoted from Hamlet “To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer”.

Mr. Shetty concluded his investigating discourse of current management dogmas with the weight of philosophers and play writers of yester years in his presentation; he ended with a quote from Chanakya “Do not be very upright in your dealings for you would see by going to the forest that straight trees are cut down while crooked ones are left standing”.

He advised us to cease from deferring decisions and suggested books for further reading.

Mr. Satya Prabhakar, CEO of Sulekha.com on Entrepreneurship and Business Management
Mr.Sulekha Satya Prabhakar, CEO of Sulekha.com on Entrepreneurship and Business Management

On 02 September 2009, Mr. Satya Prabhakar in his passion filled lecture shared with the Patriots (class of 2010), lessons on Entrepreneurship and Business Management. His lecture was a muse, a ride through the corridors of philosophers; it was as if we were eavesdropping on the greatest thinkers of the civilization involved in a colloquial debate. The quotes that we were presented were each channels of profundity, the speaker in his calm demeanor debunked the clichés and filled life into the poetical treatise on Entrepreneurship.

Sulekha.com is the winner of “Design Lion at Cannes 2009”, “Best Indian Local Search for the year 2008”. Mr. Prabhakar shared with us the masterpiece visual advertisement- “Arjuna the Archer” that won the prestigious award at Cannes.

Mr. Prabhakar sharing his views on Entrepreneurship quoted Warren Tercy- “Civilization marches on the shoulders of Entrepreneurs”. He noted that the road to entrepreneurship is a daunting task and added “it is as if you are swimming upstream all the time, the moment you stop, you know what will happen”. In his lecture he questioned the very fundamental urge of Entrepreneurs and advised us to pursue only if we are sincerely committed to venture into the field. In a different context, he quoted a Latin proverb “When there is no wind, row”, and opined that there often is no support for an entrepreneur, but himself. He added “You have no one to blame, but yourself”.

On Management, he began by quoting Jigar Maradabadi, Jalaka and other poets, writers of prose and philosophers. Referring to the challenges ahead for budding entrepreneurs on human resources front, he noted that an employer hopes that the employee should exhibit ‘independent thinking’, ‘self motivation’, ‘hunger for excellence’. An employee on the other hand affiliates himself with the three 4 letter words ‘work’, ‘love’, ‘hope’. He observed that an employee should be passionate, and should be pursuing multiple channels to quench his thirst for knowledge. Quoting Peter Drucker “What gets measured gets managed”, he opined that a manager fulfills his job if he succeeds in making the employees feel uncomfortable (by forcing them into unexplored territories) rather than letting them feel comfortable (by feeding them with mundane daily routines).

The lecture with overtones of quotes and air of philosophy ended with Mr. Prabhakar quoting Mohammad Iqbal that says ‘train yourself to get what you want’.

Challenge the status quo

August 26, 2009: The fifth edition of SWIM - Successful Women in Management was held in the sprawling campus of Great Lakes today. The theme of the event was “Make your own rules by breaking the glass ceiling”.

The event was attended by an illustrious list of glass ceiling breakers, the likes of Ms. Radhika Sarathkumar Creative Director, Radaan Mediaworks (I) Limited,
Ms. Anita Gupta, Senior Vice President and Managing Partner JWT,
Ms. Renuka Krishna Vice President HR, KPIT Cummins.
Swim 2009
From left to right: Professor Krishna Ram, Ms. Radhika Sarathkumar Creative Director, Radaan Mediaworks (I) Limited, Dr. Bala V. Balachandran, Dr. Ms. Kiran Majumdar Shaw CMD, Biocon Limited, Professor Sriram

Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CMD of BioconThe chief guest of the event, Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CMD of Biocon, ignited the entrepreneurial zeal through the glimpse of her own journey of grit & determination. In the coming moments Ms Shaw took through her journey from her graduation days in Ballarat University, Australia to being visionary leader of one of the most innovative companies of our times. Even though license raj has been bane of India of the 1980s, she reminded us that lack of information was the biggest hurdle. Describing her entrepreneurial journey as a chance incident, she urged the class of 2010 to take full advantage of the new opportunities that today’s India is showering upon us. In her words “Entrepreneurship is all about building credibility and standing for your principles”. She advised to the budding entrepreneurs in the class to never be fixated about something just because one had started it, and added, one should challenge the business model at every single time.

India: Let a billion entrepreneurs shine

India has suffered from the image of an imitator but things are looking up now. Affordable innovation is what India needs now. And Biocon with novel drugs, first oral insulin, antibodies for cancer is moving in the right direction. About failures she said, entrepreneurs are not quitters, failures are temporary, giving up is permanent. To be a successful entrepreneur one should challenge the status quo and learn from mistakes. In response to one of the questions by a student, she said that maintaining a revenue stream at the early stage of a venture is pivotal. “I never took a salary for 3 years after launch of Biocon”.

Ms. Radhika opened her speech with an innocuous confession, “This is my first time at a B-school”. She shared with us, anecdotes from childhood, and her experiences from the film industry. “You have to evolve every passing day, reinvent yourself” said she. She spoke about the Film Industry’s apparatus-the mistreatment of female actors. “I was asked to play Rajnikanth’s mother, the same actor I had acted along with as a heroine”. She deplored the society’s pitiable state, for women are ill treated.  She advised students to embrace solitude when faced with indecisive situations. “I have always believed in what I did” she continued “except on my house walls, I signed on everything”. And, concluded with the most precious of all “I never complained, I enjoy my days”.

Ms. Anita in her speech with anecdotal overtones referred to the Kailash trip as “the most amazing and life changing experience”. In praise of her company that had won 3 awards at the prestigious Cannes festival, she said “We chose a category, worked for it and won for the country in 75 years”. In response to one of the student’s query, she said “be very clear about your strengths, position in the company, focus on what you wish to be, and remember that there are no shortcuts to success”.  Speaking about the event, she said “there are obstacles, both hidden and obvious. But, people treat you the way you allow them to treat you.

Ms. Renuka began by admitting “it’s a daunting task to come after eminent speakers such as Ms. Shaw, Ms. Radhika and Ms. Anita, I’m a mere IT professional in the midst of recession”.  She embarked on a journey to confront the very definition of success. “If you don’t have a good night’s sleep, be a good spouse and a parent, you are not successful” she said. She defined success at work as a mere subset of the monolithic entity “success” as referred to in today’s world. “Most successful women are mothers. All these mothers have brought up successful men. I do not see unsuccessful women at all”, she concluded thus “Ultimately, it is about being happy”.

As the event came to an end, we were proud to salute the spirit of these women. The hand that rocks the cradle truly rules the world.

Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research inks MOU on Energy Management with Great Lakes
Dignitaries: Dr. Baldev Raj, Dr. Sai Baba and Dr. Prabhat Kumar

Dr. Baldev Raj, Director, IGCAR and Dr. Bala V. Balachandran, Dean, Great Lakes Institute of Management signed a MOU today pledging co-operation in the study of Energy Management.

Energy scenario

In his characteristic and insightful speech Padma Shri Dr. Baldev talked about the importance of energy and the pivotal role it plays in nation building. “Coal is still the king, but we need science & technology to find out newer ways to make country energy secure”. He sympathized and said “Common person is concerned about availability of energy”. In another 25 years energy industry will become a trillion dollar industry. According to him, this is an apt time for the younger generation to take initiative and develop multi parameter thinking. India is known for frugal engineering and it should be put to use in the energy sector.

Dr. Baldev also felt that there is an urgent need for a think tank on energy. Though India is a global leader in Fast Breeder Reactors, the country needs to come up with long term strategies to harness the renewable sources of energies like the Solar, Wind and Tidal energies. He emphasized that Science and Technology alone cannot accomplish this herculean task – razor sharp management minds and in-depth Financial Risk Management of such large scale projects are required to successfully execute them.

MOU

The association of Great Lakes with Department of Atomic Energy goes a long way. Dr. Baldev Raj also taught as a visiting faculty at Great Lakes. The MOU will develop the idea based collaboration at Great Lakes with the energy management insight of IGCAR. Great Lakes, in collaboration with Baur College of Business, University of Houston, is in advanced stages of finalizing an Executive Programme on Energy Management.

Great Lakes has also partnered with IGCAR to make a difference to the neighboring areas of Kalpakkam, situated at around 65 Km from Chennai. Karma Yoga, an initiative where all the 260 students of Great Lakes visit assigned villages and work for the upliftment in terms of health care, sanitation, communication, micro finance among others.

  Future of social media
18th July 2009

Mukund Balasubramanian CTO, Photon Infotech and Sachin Bhagwata Director Presales, Photon InfotechMr. Mukund Balasubramanian CTO, Photon Infotech and Sachin Bhagwata Director Presales, Photon Infotech visited Great Lakes on 18th July. The guest lecture covered social media, which Mr. Subramanian supposed is the pivot that marketing is currently hinged on. He contended strongly that social media has reached its tipping point and is already showing signs of dominance in the field of marketing. Through the illustrative presentation of the company’s credentials, he presented to the class, the microcosm of the domain that was once in its niche (infancy), but is now all pervasive.

The lecture swathed across the whole arena of social media and the frontiers that Photon Infotech has ventured into. Social media with Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin is a powerful tool for many organizations, so much so that some of the organizations are squeezing more mileage from the net than from the traditional media. Mr. Balasubramanian is confident that the ‘paradigm shift’ in marketing is occurring right now, most of the organizations today are experiencing an uncertain demand largely because social media has increased the dynamic quotient of marketing.

Later Mr. Balasubramanian responded to questions from some of the patriots, shared his experiences from Stanford University, entrepreneurial pitfalls and how to avoid them. He took us all on the journey right from Photon Infotech’s inception through the tough times of ‘dot com bubble’ to the current period. The lecture was concluded with a token of appreciation from Great Lakes.

Mr. Mahendran, MD Godrej Sara Lee at Great Lakes

Mr. A. Mahendran Managing Director, Godrej Sara Lee Ltd and deputy chairman, Who created the Good Knight brand right from scratch? Mr. A. Mahendran - Managing Director, Godrej Sara Lee Ltd. Incidentally, he is presently the Deputy Chairman of the Business Advisory Council at Great Lakes.

Mr. A. Mahendran visited Great Lakes on 11th July. His visit preceded the distribution of ‘Good Knight-low smoke mosquito coil’ to the students. Mr. Mahendran wanted the Patriots (Class of 2010 at Great Lakes) to experience the new product and present him some critical and insightful feedback. Why would the Patriots do it? The stakes were high – proponents of the best 3 feedback would fly business class to the Godrej headquarter in Mumbai!

Mr. Mahendran addressed the Patriots on Entrepreneurship: He spoke to the class of 260 seated in the main lecture theater at the Great Lakes campus (one that strikes every guest lecture with its outer humility and inner grandeur), and took them on a roller coaster ride of Good Knight, a product that he co-created back in the eighties. He paused briefly on the anecdotes that he thought were truly consequential in the brand’s success. The speech also touched upon the fundamental shifts in Indian consumer base and the ever changing landscape of opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Strategy and leadership: Mr. Mahendran is closely associated with the institute, and he was at ease sharing some of the strategic moves Good Knight has maneuvered under his leadership. He also explained the significance of an employee pool high on emotional quotient. His insightful clamor for leadership, which he believed the country is in need for, was the moment of transparent display of insatiable hunger – the hunger for the pursuit of excellence, the hunger to sustain and the hunger to improvise.

Incidentally, Great Lakes under the leadership of Dr. Bala Balachandran shares the same philosophy- the indomitable spirit and the illimitable quench on the inside, presented with humbleness and great humility to the world at large.

Towards the end, Mr. Mahendran, in his characteristic calm and friendly demeanor, listened to all the feedback voiced out by the class. He was visibly amazed by the thought provoking responses and the incisive analysis of the Patriots. He was so overwhelmed by the feedback that he instantly revised the number of the declared award – the upper limit of ‘best 3 to fly’ was taken off – he would sponsor everyone to fly to the Godrej headquarter whose responses would be found insightful by his team! That was truly a moment of achievement for the Patriots – it is not easy to influence a top notch MD, but we have done just that with ease!
