Yale Great Lakes
Introduction
Yale - Great Lakes Center for Management Research
Great Lakes Institute of Management has been bringing the best brains in the world of management to India with an objective to provide world class management education.
We have tie-ups with eminent universities of international repute. One such initiative is Yale-Great Lakes Center for Management Research, started in partnership with Yale University of USA. This center aims to promote, facilitate and advance India-centric management related research which contributes to the development of basic and applied knowledge in the field of management. The center will be a bridge that links scholars around the globe with India as a common interest.
Some definitive steps towards this objective include inclusion of greater research component in the post graduate program through an empirical study; promoting collaborative research among students in association with other universities; publishing Great Lakes Herald, a journal in the area of management; organizing an international annual research conference and strengthening of research environment and infrastructure.
Empirical Study
By way of better achieving the institute’s mission of creating business ready managers, an empirical study requirement has been introduced as part of our PGPM starting May 2007.
All coordination with respect to this empirical study will be handled by the Yale-Great Lakes Center for Management Research (referred to as Yale Center henceforth).
This empirical study will be done either individually or by a group of two or three students jointly. It will span the entire year and will count as six credits (equivalent to two 3-credit courses), and will require not less than 120 hours of input per student.
The expected outcome of the empirical study is a paper coauthored by the students with their faculty guides, to be submitted to a refereed journal or conference.

| Great Lakes Institute of Management has been bringing the best brains in the world of management to India with an objective to provide world-class management education. We at Great Lakes believe that research is one of the fundamental methods to achieve this objective and we are committed to facilitate quality management research in India. For this purpose, Great Lakes has established tie-ups with eminent universities of international repute. |
| One such initiative is Yale-Great Lakes Center for Management Research, started in partnership with Yale University, USA in 2005. Yale-Great Lakes Center for Management Research aims to promote, facilitate, and advance India-centric management related research that contributes to the development of basic and applied knowledge in the field of management. The center will be a bridge that links scholars around the globe with India as a common interest. |
| As part of this initiative, we have been organizing an annual international research conference in Chennai since 2006, in which illustrious scholars from leading institutions in India and abroad participate. We invited papers for the sixth international research conference this year, and we selected 18 papers for presentation. Karma-Yoga
“Karma-Yoga is the attaining through unselfish work of that freedom which is the goal of all human nature"
(Swami Vivekananda, Complete Works, Vol. 1, p. 110).
At Great Lakes we believe in Karma-Yoga philosophy, where human actions are not driven by greed, but by the ideals of selfless duty. Great Lakes Institute of Management incorporates ‘Project Karma-Yoga’ as an integral part of its Post-Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) curriculum, which aims at nurturing future managers with sharp business acumen and nobler values. All the PGPM students are required to do the Karma-Yoga project for the first five months; the project is optional for interested students for the last seven months.
Karma-Yoga project, guided by Dr. Venkat R. Krishnan (Director, Yale-Great Lakes Center for Management Research), is a unique medium for students to connect with ground realities and play their role in bringing a positive change in the scheme of things. Our vision is to create a rewarding and sustainable relationship between business and society through Karma-Yoga. The purpose of the project is to make students aware of their social responsibilities and to channel their energies in helping the underprivileged.
Karma-Yoga project is based on the philosophy of selfless service, through which Great Lakers transform people belonging to nearby villages. There are 20 villages which have been adopted by Great Lakes. Students visit these villages as part of Karma-Yoga program. The first objective is to enhance the self-esteem and self-efficacy of the villagers (i.e., to empower them), so that they are able to lead a better quality life. Secondly, it aims at nurturing future business managers with nobler values and the ability to understand the realities of the society that we live in. Key focus has been in the fields of education, health, agriculture, and small business. Karma-Yoga program runs throughout the year and has been quietly transforming the lives of the people.
Over the past years, Great Lakers have been involved in organizing health camps, financial inclusion programs, agricultural training programs, etc., in association with leading hospitals and several NGOs. Health camps and eye camps at door step have benefited many people. (For more information, visit http://glakeskarmayoga.wordpress.com/).
Karma-Yoga is an initiative towards “Empowerment through Partnership” and it certainly makes long-lasting impact on the lives of many who get associated with it. The project creates a mutual win-win situation for both the students and the villages. The students understand their responsibility towards the society and the villages get budding managers as volunteers to work for village development. Students get the opportunity to apply in practice what they learn during the one-year PGPM. The project provides an experiential learning of transformational leadership.
