It was as though we just arrived at the Platinum rated serene Green campus of Great Lakes at Manamai near heritage coastal town of Mamallapuram to begin our MBA journey. 7 weeks passed in a jiffy and before we realised Term 1 was over! Back to back classes, assignments, presentations with a few hours of sleep thrown in changed our entire perspective of time management! A fitting finale to Term 1 and the seven weeks was International Yoga Day celebration at the campus which turned out to be a complete stress buster and rejuvenator !!
Yoga – The word derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ means Union. It is a union of art and science. Yoga embodies the unity of the body and the mind, through a set of practices that lead to physical and mental well-being. It has been practised for more than 10,000 years in India dating back to the Indus-Saraswati civilisation. In recent times, yoga is being increasingly recognised and practiced worldwide. The longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, June 21 is chosen to celebrate International Yoga Day.
Yoga day was celebrated at Great Lakes Institute of Management on 21st June 2017, by organising a session, led by one of our teaching staff & yoga practitioner , Mr. Chandan Palaksha. He has been practising yoga for a long time which has helped him lead a healthy life. Sri Pattabhi Jois, a direct disciple of Sri T.Krishnamacharya, mentored and taught him Yoga. He took us through , the essential practices involved in Yoga, the postures (Asanas), breathing exercises (Pranayam) and chanting of mantras that were taught and practised during the session. Mr. Nachiketas , another member of the teaching staff shared his knowledge on the various practices and benefits of actively engaging oneself in Yoga.
A set of Yoga Asanas like Trikonasan, Padahastasan, Virabhadrasana, and Surya Namaskar was demonstrated and taught to the participants . Yogic techniques, such as Sutra Neti and Jala Neti, which are used to clean nasal and respiratory passages were demonstrated by Mr. Chandan. These techniques are essentially used as a preventive measure from catching cold and other respiratory tract related problems.
Mr. Natraj, another lecturer in Great Lakes Institute of management, gave us an inspirational speech touching upon his own experience in overcoming physical illness through the art of yoga. He strongly believes that yoga is a better medicine than the drugs prescribed by doctors. He gave insights on the defence mechanism of the body towards respiratory related diseases.
The session was rejuvenating, especially after a tiring week of end term examinations . The students were highly motivated and they had many essential learnings to take away from the session. Yoga day could not have come at a more appropriate time and celebrated in a better way than at Great Lakes!
